In our wear tests, dip powder and acrylic both reach three weeks or more when applied well, while gel polish averages two to three weeks. The real difference is feel and removal: gel stays thinnest and flexes, dip and acrylic are harder and need longer acetone soaks. Pick by lifestyle, not by marketing.

Two to three weeks of clean wear is realistic for gel polish on prepped nails; growth at the base usually shows before the color fails. Gel-X and BIAB stretch closer to three or four weeks with a fill. Hot water, picking, and skipped base coat are the usual early killers.

Buff the shine off the top coat, soak a cotton pad in pure acetone, press it on the nail, wrap with foil, and wait ten to fifteen minutes. The gel should flake off with a wooden stick using almost no pressure. If it resists, re-wrap and wait five more minutes. Peeling it off takes nail layers with it, every time.

You can, but slowly: clip the free edge, file the surface thin, then soak in hot soapy water or use an oil-and-soap soak and lift gently as the glue softens. Expect thirty to forty minutes. Acetone remains the fastest safe route; prying and biting are how natural nails get wrecked.

Surface-dry in ten to fifteen minutes per coat, but full hardening takes up to twenty-four hours: that is why polish dents overnight. Thin coats, two minutes between them, and a quick-dry top coat cut real-world risk the most. Cold water dips help less than the internet claims.

Opened bottles perform well for roughly eighteen to twenty-four months; after that they thicken, separate, and chip faster. A few drops of proper polish thinner (never acetone) revives a thickened bottle once or twice. If it stays stringy after thinning, it is done.

Match the shape to your nail bed and your hands-on time: squoval and round are the most break-resistant for short nails and busy hands; almond and oval lengthen the look of fingers on medium length; coffin and stiletto want length and a harder system like gel or acrylic to survive. When in doubt, squoval.

Round and squoval keep the most material at the stress corners, so they chip and snap least; square corners catch and lift first. Pointed shapes concentrate force at the tip, which is why stiletto wearers live in acrylic or hard gel.
